Essential Oils 101
Essential oils are highly concentrated, volatile plant extracts and they are the most pure and potent part of the plant, often called the ‘life blood’ of the plant. Similar to our bodies having blood to transport nutrients around, plants have essential oils. They are made from all or any part of a plant including bark, wood, roots, leaves, flowers, fruit peel and seeds. They are extracted through steam distillation, resin tapping and / or cold pressing.
Because essential oils are all natural, some people consider them to be gentle and nonreactive for humans. This is definitely not the case, as essential oils are extremely potent. They can be up to 75 times more powerful than dried herbs which is why they are often considered far more powerful than the plant botanicals from which they come and need to be used safely.
There are three ways to use essential oils: aromatically, topically, and internally.
Essential oils work extremely quickly and tests have shown that aromatically within:
22 seconds the molecules reach the brain
2 mins they will be found in the bloodstream
20 minutes reach every cell in your body
Essential oils are used for a myriad of different reasons and situations, however, here are some:
Emotions - Inspire a positive emotional state
Home - Eliminate and switch out chemicals in your home
Beauty - Eliminate and switch out chemicals in your beauty regime
Spiritual - Enhance spiritual practice and connection with Source
Wellness - Promote and support physical wellbeing
We began using Young Living Essential Oils over a year ago now and it’s been a really wonderful journey of self discovery, self awareness and low tox living. We were both really interested in exploring essential oils for our overall health and wellness (both physical and emotional) and to reduce the chemicals and toxins within our homes. We also had specific health niggles and problems that we wanted to try and support as naturally as possible.
It began with each of us purchasing the Young Living Premium Starter Kit and exploring and experimenting with the basic oils that we have now come to know and love. We both strongly recommend taking your time on your own essential oil journey and finding out what works for you through listening to your body. Everyone is different and has different experiences.
It took us each around 6 months of our own experiences with essential oils to realise that they had become an integral element of our life “toolkit”. We now use them in so many facets of our lives… for cleaning, health, emotional support, personal hygiene and beauty products.
Dara’s first breakthrough experience with the oils was using a blend called PanAway. She came home from the gym one evening with aching hamstrings and thought that she would try to use these new oils. She rubbed a few drops of PanAway onto her legs, diluted in approximately 2 tsps of coconut oil, and within a few minutes felt an incredible alleviating of discomfort in her body.
Amy’s first breakthrough experience was using Thieves from the Premium Starter Kit. Amy has always suffered with low immunity and chronic sore throats and so she tried out Thieves when she started to feel she was getting sick. She applied it with a carrier oil onto the soles of her feet, rubbed it into her neck area and diffused it before going to bed each night and she noticed her immunity felt stronger.
Since these initial breakthroughs we both have our favourite oils to use at different times and we are still discovering more! Some of our favourites which we now use on the daily include:
Lavender, Frankincense or Stress Away during meditation, flights and times of increased stress and worry.
Copaiba and Valor to help ground us when emotions are high and as a perfume.
Digize to assist with digestion and alleviate discomfort in the stomach and abdomen area after heavy meals or food intolerances.
Toxins & Chemicals
It is scary to think about how many chemicals you have come into contact with today. Trust us, the number is more than likely much higher than you’d guess it to be.
Did you know?
There are over 40,000 chemicals available for use in everyday household products including cleaners, cosmetics, toiletries and much more.
The average home contains 62 toxic chemicals, if not more.
The average woman uses about 12 different products containing around 168 chemical ingredients and men use on average 6 products containing around 85 ingredients in them every single day. (Now that’s a lot of chemicals!!)
The scary part is that cleaning product manufacturers are not currently required to disclose all of the ingredients used in their products nor do they have to conduct even basic health and safety testing and personal care products are also highly unregulated, and the FDA or TGA does not have a pre-approval process for the majority of these products; they do not require health studies nor do they require pre market testing before they are sold. Manufacturers argue that in small amounts, the toxic ingredients in cleaning or personal care products are not likely to be a problem, however, we would argue differently when you think about the long term risks associated with daily exposure.
Common toxins and chemicals that are used in many cleaning products:
Phthalates - Commonly found in synthetic fragranced cleaning products such as candles, air fresheners, food packaging, dish soaps and wipes. Several studies have shown associations between phthalates and human health, they’re known endocrine disruptors and can affect human reproduction or development.
Triclosan - Found in most liquid dishwashing detergents and antibacterial soaps. According to the FDA the harmful risks associated with it is that it can be linked to creating antibiotic resistant bacteria and is evidence to prove that it causes thyroid issues. It is also not biodegradable.
2-Butoxyethanol - This will be found in window, kitchen and multipurpose cleaners. It provides products with a sweet smell and isn’t always listed on the products label. It can cause severe kidney and liver damage.
Others: ammonia, sodium hydroxide, chlorine, petroleum distillate, isopropanol, sodium hypochlorite.
Common toxins and chemicals that are used in many personal care products:
Parabens - These are one of the main preservatives used in a lot of personal care products, including skin care, cosmetics, soaps and even baby products. They allow products to survive for months, even years on shop shelves or in our bathroom cabinets. They are known hormone disruptors and have been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues.
Fragrance and Parfum - Used in a lot of soaps, shampoos, perfumes, cleansers and other beauty products. If a product smells nice, it is more attractive and therefore customers are more likely to purchase it. They are linked to causing allergic reactions, asthma, headaches, nausea and hormone disruptions. Note: This is a ‘loophole’ in the industry as companies only have to disclose either the word ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’ on the bottle and NOT list out the actual synthetic or toxic fragrance ingredients (which by the way there are thousands of!) so the consumer is left thinking there is only 1 safe sounding fragrance in her shampoo vs 26 harmful chemicals.
Fluoride - Found in many toothpastes and mouthwashes, and has been linked to causing bone disease as well as thyroid problems. Note: this is why you should also invest in a water filter that removes fluoride.
Others: triclison, phythalates, formaldehyde, aluminium, propylene glycol, mineral oil.
Ditching your chemical laden household and personal care products and switching to toxic free alternatives is a journey, one that we are both still on ourselves. It is not something that happens overnight and also may never be perfect (i.e. completely toxic free) but know that whatever little steps you take to switch out things in your home or life, you are bettering your health, your family's health and the environment. We have been loving this journey and experimenting by making our own DIY products using the Young Living essential oils and products.
Why Young Living
There is a lot of controversy about which oil company is the best and we are most definitely not here to convince you that YL is the best.We have simply been on a journey of doing our own research, using the oils ourselves for over a year now and witnessing the benefits and blessing they have provided us. We do believe Young Living is different to most other essential oil companies for all the facts outlined below, however, unfortunately without regulation in the industry it is difficult to know who to trust. We wish we had this video by Jen O'Sullivan back when we were choosing which company to purchase oils with and highly encourage you all to spend the time to listen to it. Jen is the most thorough, scientific and factual person we have found to date educating on essential oils.
Here are some key reasons why Young Living is different:
Authentic - In operation for 24 years with D Gary Young being a pioneer in the modern essential oil movement.
No fractionation - YL is the only company on the market across the board (i.e. all their oils) that does not modify their oils i.e. don't fractionate them. Fractionating essential oils is a separation process through distillation that removes the heavier molecules so that is is left with the oily stuff. So whilst most good essential oil companies on the market are pure, they are fractionated because they want to make sure the consumer is getting a nicer smelling oil. These practices will produce a nicer aroma smelling oil, however, this inhibits the deepest therapeutic benefits and leaves the consumer questioning whether they are getting the true botanical.
Testing - YL tests more than any other company on the market. 18-20 different tests on each batch in triplet, two times in the process - the bottles can be tested up to 120 times before you receive that bottle. YL uses 3-6 different 3rd party labs that the FBI and CIA use.
Control - YL has partner farms and these are rigorously monitored and trained. Other companies don't care what partner farms do, they just care about testing, however testing is NOT always accurate.
Seed to Seal process - YL is only companies that controls the seed i.e. to ensure purity right from the beginning. The Seed dictates DNA of that plant so VERY important to ensure purity.
Ownership - YL owns more farmland and distilling land than all oil companies combined which ensures that YL can control the seed to seal.
Cultivates - A lot of people think they want their oil company to "wildcraft" i.e. source oils from their natural habitat, however, this is not always sustainable and it depletes the earths natural resources. YL on the other hand cultivates the oils at their farms in similar habitats to ensure sourcing sustainability to renew the land.
The Foundation - YL covers all administrative costs of the YL Foundation to ensure that 100% of your donations go directly to the projects and partnerships.
